New ROLLFORWARD option : TO END OF BACKUP

new option on rollforward to take you up to the minimum recovery time for the database

Some of the new features in DB2 Viper 2 will probably never get much press attention or even be in a presentation at a conference because they are pretty small. But they can sure help make your life easier. This is one example of such a feature.

DB2 has supported online backups for many years. To restore those backup images you must roll forward to at least the end of the backup time to ensure the database is consistent. In a DPF environment if you want to recreate the entire database you have to roll forward all partitions at least to the end of the most recent backup. Finding that time and putting it into the rollforward command can be a pain.

Now there is a new option on rollforward to take you up to the minimum recovery time for the database. Simply use

db2 ROLLFORWARD DATABASE dbname TO END OF BACKUP

Optionally if you are using DPF you can add
ON ALL DBPARTITINNUMS
to the end of the command and it will roll forward on all partitions to a consistent point in time (the minimum recovery time).
